Frequently Asked Questions about the MDM method
- What is MDM method?
MDM method (MesoDiencephalic modulation) is a non-invasive physical therapeutic method. It concerns action of very weak impulses of electric current affecting the area of diencephalon, where, besides the others, there are centres of autoimmunity. - Who is it designed for?
MDM is designed for all patients who suffer from pain due to diabetic polyneuropathy. It concerns different burning sensation in limbs, insensitivity or hypersensitivity to pressure or temperature, convulsions, restless legs, interrupted restless sleep. - How does the method help diabetics? It relieves manifestation of pain, which may be one of the accompanying symptoms of diabetic polyneuropathy (e.g. burning, coldness, sensation of heavy legs, hypersensitivity / insensitivity, problems with sleep, convulsions, weakness DK and erectile dysfunctions). The effect of the method depends on the degree of neuropathic infliction; the method can be applied repeatedly.
- Is it possible to treat children as well? In CR and EU the device is approved for treatment of adult population.
- What does the patient feel during the treatment?
In the course of the treatment the headset with the electrodes is placed on the patient´s head. Between the electrodes runs very weak electric current. In the beginning of the medical procedure the patient has creepy feeling, which usually disappears within a few minutes. - What environment should the treatment be performed in?
The treatment should be performed in quiet, slightly darkened rooms with comforting atmosphere. In the course of the treatment neither verbal nor other communication should be conducted. - What may influence the start of the medical procedure?
After fulfilling of the conditions for being included into the treatment schedule, the patient undergoes the treatment procedure, which involves placing the headset onto the patient´s head. Between the electrodes in the headset and patient´s skin there are special wet pads, which ensure proper transmission of therapeutic (treating) electric signal. The MDM device will enable the start of the procedure, i.e. it starts to generate therapeutic current for the headset after all conditions, which the device automatically checks, are fulfilled. The reason of start failure may be insufficient wetting of the pads, incorrect placement of the headset, dry skin (patient with low drink-intake) too thick or too dry hair. - Are there any known contraindications?
Basic contraindications are presence of the metal object in head, epilepsy and the state after transplantation of organs, ongoing psychiatric treatment. - What are undesirable side effects of MDM treatment?
So far no undesirable side effects have been found out. - How are the MDM method and drugs against other patient´s diseases mutually tolerated?
Diabetics usually suffer from other different diseases - hypertension, diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy etc. During application of the MDM method the therapeutic effect of actual pharmaceutical treatment may increase, therefore the doctor in the course of the treatment or afterwards should observe the treatment effect and, if appropriate, adjust dosage. - What can we do in order to be able to undergo the MDM method treatment?
In order to be included into the schedule of polyneuropathy treatment the patient should have the Application for MDM treatment, which can be found on websites of providers or manufacturer, filled in by the diabetologist. After that he should contact the provider and agree upon treatment. If the diabetologist does not fill in the Application for MDM treatment for some reasons, contact the provider and agree upon individual examination before commencement of the treatment. - How long does the treatment last?
The whole treatment course consists of 13 procedures within 10 consecutive days (during first 3 days the procedure takes place twice a day, then once a day), the procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes. - Is it possible to apply MDM method for treatment other diseases than diabetic polyneuropathy?
In CR and EU the MDM is applied in patients with diabetic polyneuropathy, outside CR procedures for other diagnoses are certified. - Is it possible to undergo the outpatient treatment?
Yes, the treatment can be performed as an outpatient treatment or while in the hospital. - How many people have undergone the treatment yet?
Until 31.12.2010 over 150 patients in the Czech Republic underwent the treatment. - Is this treatment reimbursed by insurance company?
Not yet, but one of the objectives is to include the treatment into the list of the procedures reimbursed by insurance company.
